Almaty Air Initiative is a private foundation working since 2024 for clean air in Almaty, a city of about 2.5 million people. Its 2024 research found average annual PM2.5 of 24.08 micrograms per cubic metre, about 4.8 times the WHO guideline. In its first year it surveyed 1,000 residents and 1,000 private-sector households on heating, tested fuel quality, ran a mystery-shopper check of vehicle inspections and studied low emission zones with UK experts. It also helped shape the city's atmospheric air protection rules and runs a public air-quality dashboard. Its documentary on living with smog passed 200,000 YouTube views.
