APAF-Togo, part of a farmer-training network created in 1992, teaches smallholders to integrate fast-growing leguminous 'fertility trees' directly into their crop fields, restoring soil fertility without relying on chemical fertilizer. By 2022 the programme had reached nearly 34,000 farming families across Togo, helped establish over 52,000 hectares of tree-based agroforestry fields, and put more than 9 million trees in the ground. The approach doubles as reforestation and climate adaptation, giving farmers firewood, fodder and fruit while rebuilding degraded farmland.
