The Environment Agency โ Abu Dhabi manages the 6,000-square-kilometer Arabian Oryx Protected Area in the Al Dhafra region, part of the Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Arabian Oryx Reintroduction Programme launched in 2007. Oryx that had vanished from the wild by the 1970s were bred in captivity and released back into UAE desert habitat, with further releases extended to reserves in Oman and Jordan. Aerial surveys show the protected herd growing from around 160 to 946 animals, a 22% jump over the prior count, contributing to the species' downlisting on the IUCN Red List.
