Protecting Uruguay's Grassland Birds

Founded in 1986 as GUPECA and now known as Aves Uruguay, this BirdLife International partner has identified and mapped 22 Important Bird Areas across Uruguay's grasslands, wetlands, and coast. Its Capuchino Boina Gris project works with ranchers to keep grassland habitat intact for critically endangered seedeaters, while its Marine Birds Program tackles albatross bycatch in longline fisheries. More than 450 bird species have been recorded in Uruguay, 40 of them threatened with extinction, and the organization runs the country's only long-running citizen-science bird monitoring network.
