Bankrolling Mauritania's Marine Protected Areas Forever

Founded in 2009 as West Africa's first conservation trust fund, BACoMaB invests a EUR 38.6 million endowment and channels the returns into surveillance, ecological monitoring and community development across Banc d'Arguin National Park, Diawling National Park and the Cap Blanc monk seal reserve. Banc d'Arguin alone covers 1.2 million hectares of UNESCO World Heritage coastline and hosts roughly 2 million migratory birds a year, while Cap Blanc shelters close to half the world's remaining Mediterranean monk seals. Since 2014 the fund has granted more than EUR 6.1 million to protected-area managers and local civil-society groups for rangers, research and environmental education.
