Founded in 2011 by lawyer-turned-surfer Showkath Jamal, Bay of Life runs Kovalam beach's surf school alongside the Bay of Life Foundation's ocean-safety and conservation programmes. Local children can earn free surfing lessons by clearing five kilograms of non-biodegradable waste from the beach, a model that has helped clear roughly 24 tonnes of trash from Chennai's coastline over the years. The foundation, staffed by marine biologists and trained surf coaches, has taught thousands of students ocean safety, marine ecology and lifeguarding, and has partnered with the Indian Coast Guard on beach and net-recovery cleanups.
