Bicitekas began with a single ride down Avenida Álvaro Obregón in 1998 and formally registered as a civil association in 2001 to push Mexico City toward bicycles instead of cars as everyday transport. The group's weekly Wednesday-night ride from the Angel de la Independencia still draws around 100 to 150 riders of all ages, and its advocacy helped win a 2020 reform to Mexico City's constitution enshrining safe, accessible mobility as a right. Co-founder Areli Carreón has served as Mexico City's official Bicycle Mayor since 2017, using that platform to keep pushing bike lanes and reduced vehicle emissions as public policy.
