Dakar's Mbeubeuss Pickers Fight to Stay When the Dump Closes
by Bokk Diom Association · HQ 🇸🇳 Senegal
Bokk Diom is the association of waste pickers at the Mbeubeuss dumpsite outside Dakar and a member of the International Alliance of Waste Pickers; its president is Harouna Niass. It holds close to 1,300 members, and WIEGO has reported that nearly half of members at the site are women. In May 2023 it staged its first-ever protest, blocking trucks and winning a hearing with the Minister of Urban Planning. After police evicted hundreds of pickers on 24 February 2025 and arrested 17 workers, including union and Bokk Diom leaders, the association pressed the World Bank-financed PROMOGED project to honour the livelihood restoration plan and the August 2024 Saly agreements. It is also working with the CNTS union confederation toward a national waste pickers' union.
