Burundi Red Cross: Lake Tanganyika Flood Early Action Protocol
by Burundi Red Cross (Croix-Rouge du Burundi) · HQ 🇧🇮 Burundi
Floods and landslides driven by the 2023-24 El Nino affected more than 237,000 people in Burundi and displaced over 42,000. In the country's first official anticipatory action, on 10-14 November 2023, partners issued flood warnings to more than 10,000 people and paid about US$82 each to 1,780 households near Lake Tanganyika, ahead of flooding in Rumonge. The Burundi Red Cross, WFP, the national met agency IGEBU and the Climate Centre then built a formal flood Early Action Protocol, approved on 27 July 2026 with CHF 778,786 to assist 10,000 people, with early actions triggered 0-10 days ahead of rising lake waters. About 40 community disaster risk reduction committees were trained to plan with their neighbours.
