Bicycle Mayor Network

BYCS, based in Amsterdam, appointed the world's first bicycle mayor in June 2016 — an independent, voluntary civic role held by a local resident who advocates for cycling and brokers between citizens and city hall. The network has grown to 141 bicycle mayors in 39 countries, most of them in cities with no cycling tradition at all. BYCS works to a mission it calls 50by30: half of all city trips by bicycle by 2030. Alongside the network it runs programmes such as the Bike Bus Accelerator, which helps neighbourhoods set up escorted group cycle rides to school, and publishes an annual impact report. The role is deliberately unofficial, which is what lets a bicycle mayor say things a city employee cannot.
