Founded in 2013 by then 12-year-old Melati Wijsen and her 10-year-old sister Isabel, Bye Bye Plastic Bags petitioned, lobbied and organized their way to a province-wide ban on single-use plastic bags, straws and styrofoam in Bali, enacted in 2019. The girl-led NGO now coordinates dozens of youth chapters worldwide and runs Bali's Biggest Clean Up, the island's largest annual beach and river cleanup. It has delivered plastic-reduction education to more than a million students and spoken at over a thousand public events.
