Carbo Culture heats waste biomass under high pressure without burning it, converting it into biochar that can safely store carbon in soil for over 1,000 years while co-producing renewable thermal energy. Its R3 facility near Helsinki, Finland, one of Europe's largest carbon-removal plants of its kind, is designed to remove roughly 3,000 tonnes of CO2 a year, and the company is now expanding into the Netherlands and the US. In March 2026 Carbo Culture was awarded a EUR 3.5 million Dutch government grant to build its next commercial-scale plant, ARC Middenmeer, in North Holland.
