Replanting a Salt-Damaged Wheatbelt with Native Bush

Since 2008, Perth-based carbon project developer Carbon Neutral has been replanting a 200-kilometre corridor of native trees and shrubs across Western Australia's northern wheatbelt, land that was cleared for farming and left saline, eroded and unproductive as water tables rose. Deep-rooted native mallee species lower salinity in ground and surface water, rebuild soil structure and reduce erosion, while reconnecting fragmented bushland for threatened species like the malleefowl and Carnaby's black cockatoo. The Gold Standard-certified project has planted over 35 million trees and shrubs and restored more than 21,000 hectares of degraded, salt-affected land.
