Casa Pueblo, a community organization founded in Adjuntas in 1980, has been championing solar power for two decades. After Hurricane Maria in 2017, its solar-powered headquarters let neighbors charge phones, run dialysis machines and refrigerate medications while the grid was down. It has since helped fund and install more than 350 solar systems on buildings around town, including homes in the poorest neighborhoods. Its community-owned downtown microgrid uses about 700 panels and battery storage to keep 14 local merchants, including a pharmacy, running through outages, and Casa Pueblo is pushing for 50 percent of Puerto Rico's power to be generated by solar at the point of use by 2027.
