Cycle lanes for the Kathmandu Valley

Cycle City Network Nepal brings Kathmandu Valley riders together for monthly gatherings at Basantapur Durbar Square and campaigns for cycling infrastructure and greener transport legislation. Lalitpur became the first city in the valley to act, inaugurating a 4.7km cycle lane from Kupondole and Jawalakhel to Mangal Bazaar in November 2019; by March 2021 the city had painted 22km of roads with lanes. Counts on the Kupondole–Jawalakhel stretch rose from 179 cyclists in morning peak hours in 2019 to 275 in 2020, an increase of about 55%. In January 2021 CCNN joined the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport, UNDP, Lalitpur Metropolitan City and Kantipur Media Group to launch a national cycling campaign. The lanes are shared rather than protected, which is the network's next argument.
