Chimpanzee Conservation Center: Guinea's Only Great Ape Sanctuary

Established in 1997 inside Haut Niger National Park, the Chimpanzee Conservation Center (CCC) is run by the Guinean branch of Projet Primates and is the country's only chimpanzee sanctuary. It has welcomed nearly 100 orphaned chimpanzees since opening, with around 60 currently living at the center while multi-year rehabilitation prepares younger arrivals for a return to the wild. The CCC has already released several rehabilitated groups into the park's Mafou forest, where a team continues to monitor them alongside a wild population of roughly 500 chimpanzees, while also running anti-poaching patrols and conservation education with surrounding communities.
