Ciclovía de Bogotá: 138 Kilometers of Car-Free Streets Every Sunday

Bogotá's Ciclovía was formally created by city decree in 1976 and reshaped into its modern form in the 1990s and 2000s, becoming what the city now calls the world's largest linear park. Every Sunday and holiday from 7am to 2pm, the city closes a connected network that has grown to 138.24 kilometers of streets to motor vehicles, opening them to anyone moving under their own power, from bikes and skateboards to wheelchairs and running shoes. City figures put weekly attendance at more than 1.5 million people, making it one of the largest recurring public health and recreation events in the world. The program is run by Bogotá's Institute for Recreation and Sport (IDRD) and has inspired hundreds of open-streets initiatives in cities worldwide.
