Cleaner Air Better Life began in 2018 as a pilot in 19 Punjab villages and had grown to 793 villages across 13 districts of Punjab and Haryana by 2024. It supports village cooperatives with machines such as Super Seeders and balers, farm advisories and community mobilisation so farmers can mix straw into the soil or sell it instead of burning. CII's 2024 assessment of the 2023-24 season found 94% of 85,121 intervened farmers adopted non-burning straw management, avoiding burning on 91% of 497,684 acres, around 11 lakh (1.1 million) tonnes of straw, a 71% reduction in farm fires against the previous year in those villages. Cumulatively the programme reports 28.5 lakh tonnes of straw kept from burning. These are the foundation's own assessment figures.
