CORALL: Barbados Communities Growing Coral Back From Fragments
by Coral Reef Restoration Alliance (CORALL) ยท HQ ๐ง๐ง Barbados
Established in 2016, the Coral Reef Restoration Alliance (CORALL) engages coastal communities in a 'ridge to reef' approach to restoring Barbados's reefs, running a coral nursery at Vauxhall inside the Folkestone Marine Reserve plus restoration sites at Port St. Charles and Driftwood along roughly 14 kilometers of the island's west coast. More than 400 members and volunteers, nearly 60 percent of them women, have grown and outplanted coral fragments of elkhorn, staghorn and brain coral, with over 100 fragments established and thriving across three restoration sites. CORALL also trains members as certified reef monitors and has created income opportunities for boat operators and divers who service its restoration dives.
