Bringing Good Fire Back to Yurok Country

The Cultural Fire Management Council facilitates cultural burning on the Yurok Reservation and ancestral lands in Northern California, reviving fire practices that were criminalized for over a century. Family-led and community burns clear brush to regenerate hazel for basket weaving, restore acorn and wildlife habitat, and reduce the fuel loads that feed catastrophic wildfires. The Council also co-founded the Yurok TREX (fire training exchange), which trains Indigenous fire practitioners from across the country and helps tribal members meet the legal requirements to become certified burn bosses.
