Protecting Montenegro's 352 Bird Species and Their Habitats
by Center for Protection and Research of Birds (CZIP) ยท HQ ๐ฒ๐ช Montenegro
Founded in 2000 and based in Podgorica, CZIP is Montenegro's national BirdLife International partner, monitoring the country's 352 recorded bird species, which make up roughly 65% of all species found in Europe despite Montenegro ranking only 39th in land area on the continent. The organization runs Bird Conservation and Large Carnivore programs, and in 2025-2026 led a memorandum with the Ministry of Environment and fellow NGO CDE-MES to secure formal protection for the Moraca River against hydropower development. CZIP also campaigns against sanitary and salvage logging in Prokletije National Park and works on satellite tracking and supplementary feeding proposals to help recover Montenegro's locally extinct vulture populations.
