Established in 1992 by Yolŋu leaders in northeast Arnhem Land, Dhimurru Aboriginal Corporation manages the Dhimurru Indigenous Protected Area, declared in 2000 as Australia's first combined land and sea IPA. Full-time Yolŋu rangers and cultural support staff combine traditional knowledge with contemporary science to patrol the coastline, monitor biodiversity, manage fire, control feral animals and weeds, and protect cultural heritage sites. The Dhimurru Sea Country Plan guides marine management of an adjacent estate, embodying a 'both ways' approach that keeps Yolŋu law and authority at the centre of caring for Country.
