Die Tafel Österreich (rebranded from Wiener Tafel in its 25th anniversary year) collects unsold-but-edible food from supermarkets, wholesalers and farms and redistributes it free through around 170 social institutions nationwide, reaching roughly 85,000 people affected by poverty. In 2024 the organization rescued 1,578,000 kilograms of food, a 52 percent jump on the year before, including 217,000 kg from Vienna's wholesale market and 190,000 kg from agricultural donors. Volunteers run the daily collection and delivery routes that keep the surplus out of landfill and on plates instead.
