Keeping Watch Over the Dniester River Basin
by Eco-TIRAS International Environmental Association of River Keepers · HQ 🇲🇩 Moldova
Founded in Chisinau in 1999, Eco-TIRAS unites 51 member NGOs from Moldova (including the Transnistria region) and Ukraine around the sustainable management of the 1,352-km Dniester River, which supplies roughly 8 million people across a 72,100-km² basin. The association helped negotiate the 2012 Dniester River Basin Treaty between Moldova and Ukraine and continues to push for its full implementation, alongside environmental education, youth field expeditions and public participation in water-management decisions. Its long-running youth programmes, including the annual Nistru summer school and river-basin competitions, train the next generation of local river monitors.
