Founded in 1991 in Flanders, Ecopower is a citizen cooperative in which people buy a share to become joint owners of renewable energy infrastructure rather than passive customers. By the end of 2024 it counted around 70,000 member-cooperants who together own 29 wind turbines, more than 250 solar installations, a hydropower plant and district heating networks. In 2024 alone Ecopower generated roughly 95 million kWh of green citizen electricity and invested a record €28 million in new wind and solar projects. Profits from its wind assets also fund a social program that gives low-income households free small solar installations to cut their energy bills.
