Tracking and Fighting Sarajevo's Deadly Smog

Founded in Sarajevo in 2009, Eko akcija is a grassroots environmental group working on clean air, river protection and citizen participation in urban planning across Bosnia and Herzegovina. Its zrak.ekoakcija.org platform tracks real-time air quality across Sarajevo, Tuzla, Zenica, Mostar, Banja Luka and other cities via a public website and mobile app. The group's director, Anes Podić, has documented how an estimated 30,000-40,000 Sarajevo households heating with damp wood and coal push winter PM2.5 levels dozens of times above WHO limits, driving roughly a fifth of premature deaths in the country's most polluted cities.
