Peace Renewable Energy Credits
by Energy Peace Partners · HQ 🇺🇸 United States
Energy Peace Partners invented the Peace Renewable Energy Credit, a certificate that companies can buy like any other renewable energy credit — except it can only be issued by clean power projects in conflict-affected countries, where the economics never otherwise work. The extra revenue funds things the project could not pay for alone. In South Sudan, the first P-REC agreement in the country funded 35 solar streetlights in Juba, letting businesses stay open after dark on streets that had been unlit since the civil war. A later purchase by the payments company Block let the International Organization for Migration use P-REC revenue to solar-electrify Malakal Teaching Hospital, which serves a population swollen with internally displaced people. It is a quiet piece of financial engineering aimed squarely at the places clean energy investment skips.
