The Flipflopi Project's Lamu boatyard built Ndogo, the world's first ocean-going sailing dhow made entirely from recycled plastic waste, crafted by traditional dhow builders using centuries-old techniques. Three coastal sailing expeditions covering roughly 2,500km have carried the anti-plastic message to policymakers, businesses and thousands of schoolchildren, helping shape Kenya's National Marine Litter Action Plan and Lamu's first solid waste management policy. Its Heritage Training Centre now trains local youth, including Lamu's first female boatbuilders, to turn ocean plastic into furniture, roof tiles and other everyday products.
