FRADI: Recycling Kakuma Refugee Camp's Plastic Waste

Raphael Basemi fled to Kenya's Kakuma refugee camp in 2009 and founded FRADI in 2013 to tackle both plastic pollution and refugee unemployment. The community-based enterprise collects non-biodegradable waste and processes it into pegs, buttons, rulers, plates and cups sold through the UNHCR-backed Kakuma Incubation Centre. Since November 2019 FRADI has recycled more than 10 tonnes of plastic, and over the past three years it has created more than 500 jobs for refugees and host-community members.
