Restoring the Belize Barrier Reef, Fragment by Fragment

Fragments of Hope is a community-based Belizean nonprofit that has restored coral at Laughing Bird Caye National Park and beyond since 2006, growing resilient coral genotypes in nurseries before outplanting them onto damaged reef. Its work there is regarded as one of the best examples of reef restoration in the Caribbean, with elkhorn coral transplants showing over nine years of survivorship against far higher mortality in unmanaged stands nearby. The team has since expanded outplanting to Moho Caye, South Silk Caye, and False Caye under its 'More Coral = More Fish' campaign, and pairs reef work with mangrove replanting and Sandwatch education programs for coastal communities.
