Educating Chile to Protect the World's Largest Glacier Reserves

Founded in 2017 by young Chileans wanting to share the beauty and science of their country's ice, Fundación Glaciares Chilenos now runs school and university workshops, publishes accessible science on glacier retreat, and campaigns for legal protection of glaciers as strategic freshwater reserves. Its Latitud Glaciar platform maps satellite imagery and recession data for the public, and the foundation has pushed for glaciers to be explicitly protected in Chilean environmental legislation and the country's failed constitutional rewrite. Chile's official 2022 glacier inventory, which the foundation uses in its advocacy, counted over 26,000 glaciers covering more than 21,000 km2 of national territory.
