Reforestemos: Rebuilding Chile's Native Forests After the Megafires

Fundación Reforestemos was founded in the wake of a devastating fire in Torres del Paine National Park and has since grown into Chile's largest ecological restoration campaign, running native tree-planting projects across 128 communes and 13 regions with support from thousands of volunteers. After Chile's catastrophic February 2024 wildfires killed over 130 people and burned more than 9,000 hectares in the Valparaíso region, the foundation launched a dedicated restoration plan for Quilpué, Villa Alemana, and the fire-ravaged Viña del Mar Botanical Garden. A separate 2023 Post-Fires Restoration Plan, run with Chile's forestry service CONAF and agricultural agency INDAP, targeted 750,000 native trees and 1.2 million square meters of preventive silviculture across the Biobío, La Araucanía, and Ñuble regions.
