Gibraltar's Teenage Marine Biologists

The Nautilus Project is a Gibraltar charity founded in 2016 by marine biologist Lewis Stagnetto. Its NEMO citizen-science programme logged 96 verified marine sightings covering 39 species in 2025, one of them previously undocumented in Gibraltar's waters. The same year it ran 29 marine science workshops and 14 field trips reaching 4,000 students, hauled 3,520 kg of the invasive alga Rugulopteryx okamurae out of three sites, and built a seagrass nursery to restore native meadows. Its Med Ocean Heroes scheme recognised 14 students and supported 24 youth monitors, and the charity works from a small marine laboratory at Victoria Stadium.
