Green Home: Building Montenegro's Second Marine Protected Area With Its Own Fishermen
by NGO Green Home · HQ 🇲🇪 Montenegro
Founded by biology students in Podgorica in 2000, Green Home works on biodiversity protection, sustainable development, and climate policy across Montenegro. It supported local fishermen around the Katič peninsula in forming the eight-member Association of Professional Fishermen in Katič, whose input helped shape Katič Nature Park, proclaimed by the Montenegrin government on 16 September 2021 as the country's second marine and coastal protected area. Green Home, working with WWF, also welcomed the Montenegrin government's decision to abandon original plans for four dams on the Morača River that would have flooded protected areas, and continues to monitor threats to the nearby Tara River, a UNESCO World Heritage canyon.
