Founded in 1995 after the Beijing UN Conference on Women, GROOTS Kenya now unites over 5,000 women-led community groups across 22 counties. Its land-rights program trains women and men together on Kenya's Community Land Act, builds community-led land mapping tools, and pushes for women's inclusion on community land registers and management committees. In Laikipia North alone, its approach has helped 115 pastoralist communities complete mapping and registration of communal ancestral land.
