Haitian Coaches Teach Villages to Build Their Own Latrines

Haiti Outreach, founded in 1997, runs a leadership-coaching model in which Haitian staff work with mayors, water committees and homeowners so that communities own and maintain their own infrastructure. Its 2026 sanitation initiative around Hinche, run in partnership with UNICEF, is planned as a nine-month effort from June 2026 through January. By 8 September 2026 staff had visited 4,814 homes across 47 communities and found 4,364 without a latrine, with about 27,745 people practising open defecation. Homeowners then build latrines themselves with training and support, and 57 had been completed at that point.
