Hedgehog Street: Cutting Wildlife Corridors Through UK Gardens

Launched in 2011 by People's Trust for Endangered Species and the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, Hedgehog Street responds to steep declines in Britain's hedgehog population by asking households to cut standard 13cm x 13cm 'hedgehog highways' through fences and walls so the animals can roam between gardens to feed, nest and find mates. As of late 2025 over 133,000 hedgehog holes had been registered nationwide, and more than 135,000 volunteer 'Hedgehog Champions' have signed up to make their gardens hedgehog-friendly. Early research suggests these garden-to-garden corridors are helping slow, and in places reverse, the decline of hedgehogs in urban and suburban Britain.
