Hemayat: Trauma Therapy for Refugee and War Survivors in Vienna
by HEMAYAT - Betreuungszentrum für Folter- und Kriegsüberlebende · HQ 🇦🇹 Austria
Hemayat's team of psychotherapists, doctors and interpreters provides free, language-accessible trauma treatment to people who survived torture, war and persecution before reaching Austria. In 2025 the center treated 2,006 people psychotherapeutically, psychologically and medically, including 300 children and adolescents, delivering 26,731 hours of care, a 12.4 percent increase over 2024. Clients came from 60 countries of origin, with the largest groups from Syria, Afghanistan, Chechnya and Iran, and 47 percent of those treated were women. Because demand far outstrips capacity, hundreds of survivors currently wait up to a year for an interpreter-supported therapy place.
