428,000 Chimney Stoves Now Carry Wood Smoke Out of Honduran and Guatemalan Kitchens
by Proyecto Mirador Β· HQ πΊπΈ United States
Proyecto Mirador began building stoves in Honduras in 2004 to cut the respiratory illness caused by cooking over open wood fires. Its Dos por Tres stove has a ceramic firebox, steel cooking plate and chimney, built on site in the home, and uses about half the wood of a traditional stove. The organization reports more than 428,000 stoves built, reaching over 1.7 million people in Honduras and Guatemala, with local microenterprises and more than 350 direct and indirect staff doing the building. In April 2026 it became the first Latin American cookstove project to earn an AA rating from the carbon-quality rating agency Calyx Global. The 47.5 percent household particulate reduction below is Mirador's own claim, not an independent measurement.
