Founded in 1950 by scientists and explorers, the Iceland Glaciological Society (JORFI) continues a glacier-terminus monitoring programme begun in 1930, now measuring annual retreat or advance at 35 glacier snouts across the country and feeding results into the World Glacier Monitoring Service and the peer-reviewed journal Jokull. Through its Extreme Ice Survey Iceland project, the society also trains members of the public as citizen scientists, asking them to photograph glaciers from fixed repeat-photography points to build an open, long-term visual record of Iceland's rapidly receding ice. The society owns and operates seven huts on and near Icelandic glaciers used to support this fieldwork.
