Kanyirninpa Jukurrpa (KJ) is a Martu-led not-for-profit, founded in 2005, that supports Traditional Owners to care for Country across the Great Sandy, Little Sandy and Gibson Deserts. More than 300 Martu take part in the Western Desert Martu Ranger Program each field season, working in four community-based teams from Kunawarritji, Punmu, Parnngurr and Jigalong. Rangers combine traditional fire and tracking knowledge with Western science to monitor and protect threatened species including the greater bilby, black-flanked rock wallaby, mulgara and marsupial mole across 6.5 million hectares of Indigenous land.
