Protecting Borneo's Peat Swamp Forest to Keep Its Carbon Locked Underground

PT Rimba Makmur Utama has run the Katingan Mentaya Project since 2010, protecting 157,875 hectares of carbon-dense peat swamp forest in Central Kalimantan, Indonesia from planned conversion to plantations. The project blocks drainage canals to rewet the peat, has replanted 1,660 hectares of degraded land with 210,000 native seedlings, and supports roughly 41 village communities with health services, fire-prevention brigades and alternative livelihoods. It is certified under Verra's Verified Carbon Standard and Climate, Community & Biodiversity standard and is AA-rated by BeZero and Sylvera, with close to 20 million tonnes of verified emissions-reduction credits issued to date.
