Kelp Blue grows Macrocystis pyrifera (giant kelp) on submerged offshore structures near Lüderitz, Namibia, holding a 15-year commercial license to cultivate 6,400 hectares of ocean. As the kelp grows it draws down CO2 through photosynthesis, and the company is developing methodologies to permanently sequester that carbon in the deep sea while selling kelp-derived biostimulants and feed. Independent eDNA monitoring around the farm has recorded a jump in resident marine species from a baseline of 135 to nearly 800, and the project employs dozens of local Namibians.
