Founded in 2014 by 11 concerned citizens, Klimaatzaak sued the Belgian federal and regional governments for failing to meet their climate obligations. In November 2023 the Brussels Court of Appeal ruled in the group's favor, ordering Belgian authorities to cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030 relative to 1990 levels. Nearly 71,000 Belgians have joined as co-plaintiffs or supporters, making it one of the largest civil mobilizations in the country's history.
