KlimaSeniorinnen: Swiss Grandmothers Who Won a Climate Case

Verein KlimaSeniorinnen Schweiz (Senior Women for Climate Protection Switzerland) was formed in 2016 by a group of women concerned that heatwaves driven by climate change were putting older people's health at risk. After Swiss courts dismissed their case, the association took Switzerland to the European Court of Human Rights, which ruled on 9 April 2024 that the country's weak climate policies violated members' human rights, the first such judgment by an international court. The group has grown to more than 2,500 members, most of them women over 70.
