Mali is highly exposed to river floods, and the Mali Red Cross (CRM) developed a flood Early Action Protocol with the national hydraulics directorate and Mali Meteo. It first triggered in September 2022 when the Bani River at Sofara exceeded the 633 cm orange alert, releasing CHF 62,890 to protect 1,000 vulnerable households with shelter kits, sandbags, water-treatment supplies, evacuation and radio messages. A renewed riverine flood EAP was approved on 14 March 2025 with CHF 493,567 to assist 4,000 households (24,000 people) along the Niger and Senegal Rivers, triggered by a 5-year-return-period flood forecast 4 to 8 days before the peak.
