The Martuwarra Fitzroy River Council is an entirely Indigenous-led alliance of Elders from the independent nations of the Fitzroy River catchment in Western Australia's Kimberley region. Formed after the 2016 Fitzroy River Declaration, the Council applies First Law to assert the river's right to life and flow, and produced a Conservation and Management Plan for the National Heritage-listed catchment to fend off large-scale irrigation and mining schemes. Traditional Owners act as River Keepers, pairing customary knowledge with western science to monitor one of Australia's last major free-flowing rivers.
