Formed in 1985 in response to the Green Revolution's push toward uniform hybrid seed, MASIPAG unites more than 500 farmer people's organizations, NGOs and scientists across the Philippines. Its farmer-led breeding program maintains over 2,000 rice varieties, including 700 traditional landraces, across national and regional back-up farms, developing strains tolerant to floods, drought, salinity and pests. Around 38,000 farmers across 49 provinces access these seeds free of patents, treating them as a shared commons rather than corporate property.
