Ethiopian Schoolkids and Farmers Rescue Local Seeds

MELCA (Movement for Ecological Learning and Community Action) is an Addis Ababa-based NGO that links agroecology, sacred forests and local knowledge. On 18 November 2025 it held a Local Seed and Food Fair with a Youth Biocultural Diversity Celebration in Telecho, Welmera District, where more than eight SEGNI Club schools took part and the Malka Foata Farmers Cooperative was recognised for seed conservation. In Amhara's Wereilu District it works with the Endelibe Local Seed Conservators and Producers Farmers Association to restore locally adapted varieties and expand a local seed bank.
