Founded in 1997, the Middelgrunden Wind Turbine Cooperative raised around 23 million euros from roughly 8,650 local shareholders โ€” individuals, unions and small businesses โ€” to jointly fund ten of the twenty 2 MW turbines built in 2000 on the Middelgrunden shoal, 3.5 km off Copenhagen, Denmark, with the municipal utility owning the other half. When completed it was the world's largest offshore wind farm, and it remains a widely studied model for citizen-owned renewable energy. The cooperative's ten turbines produce about 49,000 MWh of clean electricity a year, with the full 40 MW farm supplying roughly 4% of Copenhagen's electricity consumption.
